The Afterlife School is a limbo for people who have experienced trauma or hardships in life. They must overcome these regrets before passing on and being reincarnated. The school is populated by NPCs, fabricated students and teachers, as well as real souls like the SSS members. The environment is controlled by the student council president, Kanade Tachibana (Angel), who uses supernatural powers to suppress delinquency. The school's true purpose is revealed by Otonashi: to help souls resolve their regrets. Mysterious shadow-like entities, created by computers programmed to activate when love was detected, begin attacking residents, turning them into NPCs. Yuri destroys the source of these shadows, allowing the remaining members to pass on.

In Their Own Story

The story follows Yuzuru Otonashi, a boy with amnesia who ends up in the afterlife. He meets Yuri Nakamura, who invites him to join the Afterlife Battlefront (SSS), an organization she leads that rebels against God. Their enemy is Angel, the student council president. Otonashi participates in SSS operations, such as diversion concerts by the band Girls Dead Monster (GDM). During one concert, lead vocalist Masami Iwasawa passes on after achieving satisfaction through her music. After the SSS demotes Angel, Otonashi regains his memories with the help of deputy president Ayato Naoi's hypnosis. He befriends Angel (Kanade Tachibana) and helps her make peace with the SSS. They work together to help other members pass on, with Hinata helping Yui move on by fulfilling her desire for marriage. After Yuri destroys the shadow entities, a graduation ceremony is held. Naoi, Yuri, and Hinata pass on, leaving only Otonashi and Kanade. Otonashi confesses his love, but Kanade reveals her regret was thanking her heart donor—Otonashi—and passes on. In an alternate epilogue, Otonashi becomes student council president to help other souls while waiting to see Kanade again.
